ASEAN MPs call on Cambodian government to end persecution of opposition

JAKARTA, 30 November 2015 – The Cambodian government must immediately reinstate Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) President Sam Rainsy and Vice President Kem Sokha to their positions in the National Assembly, drop all charges against Rainsy, and take measures to ensure the security and freedom of opposition MPs and activists, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) said today.

“The situation is extremely concerning to parliamentarians from across Southeast Asia,” said APHR Chairperson and Malaysian MP Charles Santiago.

“The international community, including ASEAN, must make clear that these actions are unacceptable—for the sake of Cambodia and the wider region. If collective pressure does not mount against the Cambodian government, other regional leaders will feel empowered to act in a similarly hostile and arbitrary manner toward their critics.”

“It is imperative that ASEAN and the wider international community take clear action in opposition to these attacks and intimidation. They should also support efforts to ensure that free and fair elections are able to proceed in Cambodia as scheduled in 2018,” said CNRP parliamentarian Mu Sochua, who is also a member of APHR.

“The future of Cambodian democracy is at stake. The ruling authorities must understand that the rest of the world stands firmly on the side of free expression in Cambodia and supports the right of all candidates to stand for election.”

As Asean Moves Toward Integration, How Will Cambodia Fare?

What Cambodia is going to do is to make sure that it has more transparencyIt needs to have financial regulation. It has got to cut down on corruption, cut down on protectionism, monopoly and cronies. All of that has to be done. It will be very difficult, which is why, as I said before, non-tariff barriers are where the reform has to be done, and there are not enough political will to accomplish this yet…If you don’t do it, the business and investment will go to other countries.

ASEAN Creates ‘Community’ Encompassing 600+ Million People

Leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Sunday signed a declaration establishing a formal economic, political, security and socio-cultural community.

Compared to the European Union, the AEC is culturally and politically more diverse with various systems of government including communism (Laos and Vietnam), a military junta (Thailand), authoritarian (Cambodia), quasi-civilian (Myanmar) and a monarchy (Brunei).

In a number of the ASEAN states corruption is considered endemic, a problem seen as hampering the economic integration process.

“As ASEAN moves towards regional economic integration, unequal and unsustainable economic growth will result in worsening poverty, inequalities of wealth, resources, power and opportunities between countries, between the rich and the poor and between men and women,” warned the ASEAN Civil Society Conference and ASEAN Peoples’ Forum in a joint statement.
