#cambodge : Rhona SMITH : Détérioration des conditions des Droits de l’Homme

Law in the Kingdom is being used as a “political tool“. A variety of different laws have been used in order to arrest or charge or detain members of the opposition party.

Rhona SMITH : Special Rapporteur des Droits de l’Homme des Nations Unies

“Cambodia is close to a dangerous tipping point,” Ms. Smith said. “All laws must be applied equally and fairly to all political parties and their members to ensure protection of the democratic space in the run-up to the elections. The political situation, which includes renewed threats, judicial proceedings and even physical beatings of members of the opposition, is worrying.”

#cambodia : United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) report

Cambodia economy bucks regional trend

The study adds that while China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia sustained or even increased the income gap between the richest 20 per cent and the poorest 20 per cent of their countries, Cambodia, fuelled by an increasing labour force, was one of the few that saw a decrease in income inequality.

But the UN-backed study also pointed out that Cambodia, along with its fellow least developed neighbouring countries, continues to lag behind the rest of the world with regards to integrating into global supply chains.

This in turn, “limits their ability to diversify their economies and engage in higher value-added activities,” the study says.

And in the garment sector, which accounts for 80 per cent of the Kingdom’s total export market, there is still room for improvement.

“The minimum wage in the (Cambodia’s) garment industry, which employs about 600,000 workers, was raised; yet, working conditions still need to be improved,” the report says.

#cambodia : violence of HUN SEN’s regime : US , EUROPE & UN Stands

QUESTION: Yesterday I asked you a question about Cambodia and the arrest of some opposition leaders. I understand that you have an answer.

MS. PSAKI: I do. Mm-hmm. We condemn the violence that occurred in Freedom Park on July 15th, so just a couple of days ago, which resulted in injuries to numerous security personnel and protesters. We call on all parties to exercise restraint and to avoid further violence and escalation. We emphasize the importance of due process guarantees and call for the release of the Cambodia National Rescue Party officials. We once again also urge – again urge the Cambodian Government to lift the ban on demonstrations and allow for the peaceful exercise of freedom of assembly.

QUESTION: Thank you.

Work Continues At Contested KDC Site

Subedi Calls on KDC to Halt Development

“For more than 10 years now, the local community has been embroiled in a dispute over contested land and the complaints that they have sought to lodge with the court system against the authorities and KDC International for the alleged intimidation, violence and land loss, have remained unaddressed,” Mr. Subedi said in the statement.

“I call on the company, KDC International, to immediately halt development of contested land until all claims by individual families have been properly assessed by an appropriate independent body in a fair and transparent way.”
