Yoho Introduces Bill to Push Back Dictator Hun Sen

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, introduced the Cambodia Democracy Act of 2018.  Chairman Yoho released the following statement:

The Cambodian people are starving for democracy. Cambodia’s strongman Prime Minister, Hun Sen, has clung to power for decades and has no intentions of loosening his iron grip on that country. As support for the opposition has strengthened in the last few years, Hun Sen has decided that if he can no longer dominate the polls even in a rigged election system, he will retain power through force.

“Hun Sen has used violence, threats, and sham prosecutions to attack the peaceful opposition. In 2017, the regime-controlled Parliament and Supreme Court dismantled the Cambodia National Rescue Party and banned its elected officials from office, eliminating the country’s only viable opposition party.

“Hun Sen’s relentless consolidation of power means that his abuses, which also include attacks against NGOs and the shuttering of critical media outlets, will only continue. The Cambodia Democracy Act of 2018 will push back against the Hun Sen regime’s undermining of democracy and related human rights abuses by applying financial sanctions to the figures who carry out this despicable agenda and codifying the Administration’s existing visa restrictions for these individuals. This bill will help the people of Cambodia in their pursuit of democracy by imposing costs on Hun Sen’s consolidation of power.”

U.N. urges Cambodia to free opposition leader, calls detention ‘arbitrary’

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) called Kem Sokha’s arrest and detention “politically motivated,” amid an “escalating trend in Cambodia of suppression of criticism of the government” ahead of the vote.

“The Working Group considers that Mr Kem Sokha has been deprived of his liberty on discriminatory grounds, namely his political or other opinion,”

#Cambodia : “No election can be genuine if the main opposition party is barred from taking part,”

“To ensure a genuine multi-party democracy in Cambodia which respects its citizens’ participation rights, the Government must immediately release detained opposition leaders and lift a ban on the opposition taking part in the July 29 general election”.

“Those who currently rule the country have one final opportunity to reverse the current trajectory, and return instead to the constitutional path of multi-party democracy and genuine elections – ensuring a level playing field for all political parties”.

“All Cambodians have a right to openly debate and discuss political affairs; the media must be allowed to scrutinise and criticise, as well as inform the public; and civil society, including NGOs, should be encouraged to play an active role in State affairs,”.

“A liberal multi-party democracy is an essential, entrenched and non-amendable feature of the Constitution of Cambodia.”

Hun Sen willing to risk losing his oldest ally

Hun Sen was told by the Vietnamese very bluntly that he’d been in power too long and it was time to go,” the insider with close ties to senior figures in the premier’s ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP), which is believed to be divided over his tactics to sideline the main opposition party, told Asia Times.
